plant care for Aroids (Araceae family) or houseplants

General Aroid Plant Care

Aroid plants are a diverse group of plants so proper care can vary depending on the specific type of plant.  However, there are some general guidelines that can help new plant parents take care of their new plants.

Light:

Bright indirect light is preferred as harsh sunlight can scorch their leaves.  Some aroids can tolerate low light conditions but will grow slowly.

Water:

Most aroids prefer moist not soggy soil. Water when the top inch or so of the soil feels dry to the touch.  Also, use a well-draining potting mix to prevent root rot.  Unlike plants with thicker leaves, Aroids with thinner leaves like consistently moist soil.

Humidity:

Most aroids like high humidity.  For houseplants, you can increase humidity by misting the leaves regularly or by placing a humidity tray with water and pebbles near your plant.  You can also use a humidifier to increase the humidity in the room.

Temperature:

Plants from the Araceae family do not like extreme cold or drafts. They really prefer temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C).

Fertilizing:

Aroids like to be fertilized during the growing seasons (spring and summer).  You can use liquid fertilizer or slow-release fertilizer.

Aroids can be very diverse so observing your plant’s behavior and adapting your care routine will help you keep it healthy and thriving.  When in doubt, try searching online for help.  Aroids have taken the world by storm and there is a lot of good information out there.
